I have an IOgear USB KVM connecting a USB keyboard and USB mouse to a Dell Laptop that has Ubuntu 14.04 on it and a Mac Mini (latest possible OS for that hardware), Mac is circa 2008. This KVM has one connector for Video, one USB connecter for both mouse and keyboard and one audio connector.
Since version 3.0.0, QEMU uses a time based version numbering scheme: major incremented by 1 for the first release of the year minor reset to 0 with every major increment, otherwise incremented by 1 for each release from git master. KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) is not available for Mac but there are a few alternatives that runs on macOS with similar functionality. The most popular Mac alternative is VirtualBox, which is both free and Open Source. If that doesn't suit you, our users have ranked 31 alternatives to KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) and three of them are available for Mac so hopefully you can find a. KVM (short for Kernel-based Virtual Machine) is an open source application that, as you can probably tell from its name, was designed as a Linux virtualization tool for 32-bit systems. Even though you can't install KVM for Mac, there are some other tools that can come in handy for this task. Some system emulations on Linux use KVM, a special emulation mode which claims to reach nearly native speed. KVM is mainly used for x86 (32 and 64 bit) emulation on x86 hosts running Linux. Should you want to run Qemu with KVM support on a G5, depending on your distribution, you might have to compile your own kernel with KVM support.

Everything seems to work fine except for the odd occasion when I switch back to the Mac and I'm presented with the crash overlay telling me to hard reset the MAC.

This setup is somewhat new because my Windows 8 desktop system crashed, but when the windows machine was running with the Mac I was using a PS2 IOGear KVM and I never saw this Apple crash message. I did have the mouse and the keyboard into the Mac separately (from the KVM) through a USB extender/multiplier but it was not powered, and I did have to use a separate USB nouse for the PC because I could not get the USB mouse to connect to the Windows machine through the PS KVM, but I think this has nothing to do with my present problem.

Is there some strange Mac OS problem when switching USB mice and keyboards between computers using a USB KVM?
And...It doesn't happen everytime.

Thunderbolt offers a connection with state-of-the-art speed and versatility, while consolidating data transfer, video output, and charging into a single compact connector. Thunderbolt ports on a Mac computer or another Intel-based PC are generally fully compatible with existing KVM Switch devices and displays*. Depending on your Thunderbolt version, you can either switch between Thunderbolt sources using a DisplayPort-based KVM switch or a KVM switch based on another video standard with the help of video adapters.
Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) KVM Switches
The new Thunderbolt 3 standard with USB-C technology is a truly universal connection. With the help of USB-C docking stations / USB-C video adapters, you can connect your Thunderbolt 3 based computers to just about any existing KVM Switch device!*For example, you can use a HDMI-based KVM as a Thunderbolt 3 KVM Switch with USB-C to HDMI adapters.
Thunderbolt 1 & 2 use the same connector as Mini-DisplayPort, and support standard DisplayPort standard up to version 1.2. To switch between Thunderbolt 1 & 2 sources, you can use a Thunderbolt compatible DisplayPort or Mini-DisplayPort KVM Switch*:

* When adapting Thunderbolt to a different video standard or using a DisplayPort-based KVM switch, Thunderbolt-specific functionality, such as power transfer and chaining, are disabled. Thunderbolt compatible adapters are also required for adapting Thunderbolt standard.
